Zeshia has no currency, and instead it has been replaced with what are labeled "Tokens."
Tokens are electronic marks on a card, and every citizen is given a set number – monthly. Spending is monitored closely – no transaction can happen without it being recorded on three different systems. The first, of course, is the National Information Network. It records the daily activities. The spending. This of course means, that if someone spends more than their allocated number of Tokens a month – they are investigated by the Data Protection Squad. This is a government organisation that monitors all the computer systems. Something similar to Big Brother in George Orwell’s 1984, only a little more benevolent. The second system that any transaction is recorded on is the Organising Body’s – this is like a big huge super computer at the Data Protection Squad’s headquarters.
The DPS is run and controlled by the elected officials in the Organising Body – A group of a hundred people split into Social, and Economic runners. This way no-one person is in charge – everything about the society is voted for on a purely democratic basis. And the third is a one way system called the Back-Up. And it does exactly what it’s name suggests. There are two points that Back-Up can be accessed – Data can be downloaded, at the end point, and data can be uploaded. Once in the Back-Up, it cannot be tampered with. This is fail-safe programme and is undecipherable. No software will ever be allowed to develop to alter it. Such things are monitored by DPS.
People now live in huge towers called Housing Towers. Each Tower holds roughly 1000 apartments, and each person is allocated one. Of course families live together, so there is a certain amount of moving around, organisation. When an individual reaches 18, they are given their own apartment. When they are married, they chose one to move in with their partner. The free apartment is then given to an 18 year old. From birth, tokens are allocated. This allows for, say, a family of 7, to obtain more food than a family of 4. Tokens cannot be saved and moved from one month to the next, so budgeting is something the people have grown to extremely good with.
Services are exchanged. Education is given equally to all, and machinery and computers carry a huge burden of the monotonous jobs. Food is bought from vending machines, and clothes and furniture and other such things are obtained off the National Information Network. Everyone is given a certain allocation of Tokens each month for these things. And for pleasure items like CD’s, books, toys.
People work with their passions. Those who love and know how to farm, farm. Those who are passionate about caring for others, become carers, doctors nurses. The freedom that comes without worrying about money means anyone can study whatever they want.
Of course, there are the few that decide not to work, but they are easily supported and eventually get so bored they decide to do something.
At least that's the theory.
Over the last three years, a rebel terrorist organisation have arisen. Stoneage.
Stoneage are fronted by a one Maxwell Conner, who is by DPS records, dead.
They are strongly opposed to the ideas and the aims of that The System ran by the Organising Body are trying to enforce. They believe that the Tokens, limiting spending, standardising housing are infringements on the human right to live how one wants to live. They are also strongly opposed to the idea that work is only done by the skilled workers who want to work. They believe that the fact the system offers an easy option to a collection of parasites (as they call those who chose not to work) and they also believe it encourages laziness and that humanity never got anywhere by letting others mooch off the successful and clever.
No one is entirely certain what their aims are. They blow things up, are known for their ties to the former Mafia of Medias, and occasionally take over buildings, kill a few hostages, and then scarper without any apparent gain. Although some information sources are suggesting that all this front action, all this terrorist activity is merely a diversionary tactic to withdraw the media and authorities attention away from smaller, more subtle and yet much more catastrophic events.
A war is breaking out, between then modern day DPS who want to preserve this perfect state, and the terrorists. Who want to bring everything back to the Stone Age.
