Fernn, had fucked up. Fernn, for those who aren't aware, was an indvidual that Maxwell had taken on under the pretense of needing someone who was better at planting survillence equipment.
And the boy had been good. Max would've admitted that to any one had asked. Max never lied, he just never expressed what he was thinking, and he though a lot. A hell of a lot. And one such situation had him thinking right now, and that was Fernn. The little green haired twerp, had disobeyed orders.
And people didn't disobey orders when it came to Max. He'd declared level three of Latner's building off limits. Fernn had ignored him, and thrown in survellience anyway. So first, Maxwell had caused the little boy to have a near heart attack when he went into the building and completely decimated all his gear. And now Max had returned, and was fixing Fernn with a long, low, level stare.
He wasn't angry, any more. Max never held onto any emotion for very long, unless it was the idle amusement that came with messing with people's brains. Maxwell, for those that had met him, was well known for his ablity to persued you that you were going insane, or that cow shits were honey cakes. He could do much worse.
But right now, there was none of that. Fernn sat obdiently in the chair, hands resting lightling in his lap, head hanging a little.
"Max, I wasn't thinking."
"No, you weren't." That dead pan, softly spoken voice echoed through the little metal area that was Fernn's personal workspace. The click as Max loaded another magazine into the semi-autmatic was the only sound. Hand gripped it and Max pulled back, the sound of a single bullet being loaded into the firing mechanisim even worse.
Max took aim in one smooth motion.
"And you won't be thinking again."
He fired.
Brains splattered, before Fernn could even let out a sob of protest.

The day had turned out to be a rather dreary one. Weather not being what was implied but the news the young Stoneage memeber would have to bring Max. He was already in a foul mood. Though not one look at his face would show it. One would have to spend years studying the unemotional leader to know what mood he was in and what causes the changes. Even she, who has been with him since his staged death and before, knew little about his emotions. He played them off so well and that was one of the reasons she dreaded telling him that his explosions expert had been caught. By Eric Latner, no less.
Kaida crept up to the warehouse door and leaned against it slightly. Ways to break it to max about Nate flashed through her mind. Well, it did before all she could hear was the fire of a gun and shells hitting the ground. Worried for Max, Kaida burst through the door and watched Fernn slump in his chair. Oh, Max was ok. Wait. Or was he? Hed just killed Fernn. SO he wasn't technically OK. And shit. She had to give him the news to.
The medic walked up behind Max and tried her darndest to avoid looking at the bloody remains of Fernn. "We've got another situation, Max." She backed up and stood as straight as she could. "Nate's been taken into custody. And normally it wouldn't be a big deal except....Latner has him." There it was.
And now she waited for the storm to pass, with nothing more than an umbrella.

Silence. He brought the smoking gun down, flipped on the safety and slotted it back into the holster on his thigh. Damnit.
Damn, Damn, Damn, Damn.
Fucking Nate.
The only sound, the only expression that indicated that Max was more than slightly annoyed, was the entire fact that he growled. It was a low, gutteral sound and remained more as a vibration in the chest than anything else. Reaching for a radio he contacted a couple of the "drones" and told them they had a body to clear up. They came, and did so.
Shifting on his feet Max snatched up Kaida's wrist. Is was one of the very few forms of physical contact that he ever preformed, and he pulled her out of Fernn's former quarters and fixed her with a long look, hand falling away from her wrist.
For several moments he just looked at her thus. Max had always been able to read everyone like a book from the moment he met them, and normally accuratly too. Eventually he blinked, straightened up a little and turned to some shelving, reaching for a metal box on one of the top shelves.
"What happened?"

Kaida had been around long enough to know that you can't predict what Max is going to do. Can't predict what he is going to say or do. Though even with this information, she also knew not to act shocked. His hand grasping her wrist in the manner that he did put her facial features into a tight wince untill he had let her go.
Fear is in not knowing what you are facing. She did not know what Max was thinking so she feared him. Though did not show it as she stared into his face. Max wanted to know HOW Nate got caught? He really had to ask? Nate was just being, well, Nate.
"Nate had gone to the foodcourt in the city. Wearing what he normally wears." Which is not much of anything. "he had explosives on his person. Latner was there with his two dogs and a young boy. No older than 16 I'd wager." She paused to recall the scene in her mind. "Another DPS agent was there. Female. Anyway, one of Latner's dogs started acting strangly towards Nate. Latner investigated him, and found the explosives. Took him in. I left after that."
She'd followed Nate into the city. Not really to spy on him but because she was bored out of her freaking skull. Everything happened within 5 minutes. Latner, was good.
She waited patiently for another reaction from Max. Silently and patiently.

Max nodded, snapped open the box and wordlessly handed her a bullet proof vest.
"Latner's mongrol is a sniffer dog. He trained her to be so. I mentioned this at one point, but clearly Nathan didn't listen. I'll have to nail a memo to his head when we get him back." Eyes slipped shut and fingers pulled through his hair. A long, calming sigh and he shrugged off his jacket, pulling on his own vest.
"We're going to have to go in and extract him. Not that I'm doubting he'll talk, but one of Latner's boys has truth serum. Anyone will sing like a nightengale under that."
There was the sharp sound of velcro as he pulled his own vest tighter and strapped it on over his shoulders. HIs head was dipped all the while as he did so, a clear sign that he was thinking. That Maxwell Conner was thinking something through, slowly, effciently, and carefully. Well. Maybe not slowly, but certainly through.
It took several minutes, and throughout that time he was gearing himself up to go out. "The disadvatage it, Latner has forced our hand. I only want to hit DPS once at t his stage in the game. They won't be expecting it, and if we first extract Nate and then go back in, they'll have a better responce the second time around. I'll go in and plant the final connection for our update and blow part of the OB's servers, and you extract Nathan." He glanced at her.
"You up for that Kaida?" Max was more than able to go in and do both tasks himself, but it would be easier if he only had to concentrate on one thing.

So? They were going to actually have to go and bust out Nate? As much as she hated to admit it, she was glad for it. Some part of her was worried for the demolations master while the other wanted to strangle him for being dim-witted enough to go into the city. Covered in explosives no less.
Kaida took the vest and pulled it across her chest, adjusting it slightly so it didn't cause any major discomfort for her breast. Each fasten was tightened as Max spoke. The medic merely glanced up at him briefly as she finished with the vest. Kaida felt her waist and left boot. Her most used blades were there but she would need her others for what they were going to attempt. Under the *hospital* bed was a case packed full of them. She paced over to it and knelt before pulling it out. She spoke to Max quickly and with more calm then she had when giving him the news. All the while pulling out and inspecting her selection.
"Truth Serum, huh?" She pulled out a 4 x 1 blade and stuck it gingerly into her other boot. "Guess Nate really stuck his foot in his mouth this time." Another blade sheathed somewhere on her person. This time, a second gun with it. "I'll get him out. Though what do you wish me to do with him once I get him?" Kaida wanted nothing more than to kick the shit out of Nate, though he had an advantage over her. A very personal advantage.
Slamming the case shut and sliding it back under the bed, the medic turned and watched Max ready himself as well. A hairband around her wrist was removed as she flipped her hair foward and tied it as tight as she could. Couldn't afford getting shot just beause she couldn't see what she was doing. After standing up straight again, she remembered the last team invasion they'd done, they'd used Fernn's equipment. Not that she missed him. He did, after all, disobey Max. He brought it upon himself. No offense meant.
She motioned to the metal box that was once the late Fernn's. "Will we need the communicators he made?" They'd come in handy before. They might do so now and she didn't see Max as the type to not use something that may prove useful just to spite a dead person.
Though, one never knows.

Silently Max nodded, but moved over to his own desk and pulled out a case, which he kicked open. This was just a fraction of what he'd been stock piling, and it was only a glimpse of how long Max had been planning this. Most of the stuff had DPS U.V signatures on them. Which made one wonder how Max smuggled them out. But where there is a will, there is always a way.
Several of these clips he deposited about his person. "We're going in quick, and we're going in clean Kaida. I want the entire thing done in fourty-five minutes. Which means when we reach the fourti-five minute mark, you are out the building. If you can't get Nathan out, kill him."
Crouching down he fished about a little, and found a small bottle. He shook it a little. Then Maxwell dug about a little more, and found two vials. Into these, he deposited two little capsules. For the longest moment he simply stared at it, before heading over to Kaida and handing her them both.
"If you can't even get into the cell with time to get out the building, tell him to take this. It's cyanide capsules. Place one between the back molars and bite down. You're to do the same if you get caught and it looks like you can't get out, clear?"
Maxwell didn't even wait for an answer, instead he stepped around Fernn's carcass and fished around in the small box that was his belongings. A balaclava was tossed in Kaida's direction. "And wear that. Don't let them see your face."
A communicator, a little headset and ear peice floated through the air after it. It turned out, yes, they would be using the comms. It was the easiest way to keep in contact if they were on different sides of the building.

A simple yet sickening haze set around the yound mind that now listened loyaly to Max. Words merely slithered in and out her head and a nod was her only sign of recognition. Forty-five minutes wasn't bad. As long as the gaurds were easy kill, then she could get in and out in less. It has the last words his spoke after that information that sunk deep into her. Kill Nate? Sure he was more trouble than he was worth, but kill him? Kaida's insides trembled a tad bit.
It took her a second to snap out of it. As she did, Max was walking towards her with two capsules. Oh, she knew well enough what to do with them. They have been companions with her on almost all her exploits into the city. They were friendly enemies she was thankful she hadn't had to use yet. Quickly and with not a word, she pocketed them and took to watching Max again. This time with a nod. She'd do anything for Max. Death being something that came easier than some thought. Now, she thought of it and shivered.
"Understood." Kaida caught the balaclava and the headpiece. Without a word, she fixed the comm so that it wouldn't be disabled when she put the balaclava on. Hands worked fast and with experience. it didn't take long for her mind to fade back over to the food court. She was scanning over the scene again for any extras problems she hadn't thought of before. Yet the only thing that struck her odd was the kid with Latner. What was he doing with a teen boy? Wait. Latner. Shit!
"Max, if Latner took Nate in, don't you think he'll be there WITH Nate? I can't get him out if he's there. You won't let any of us touch Latner." A serious issue to be sure. Though it pissed herself off for not asking Max before. Latner....what was with Max and Eric? Why does he have such a, for lack of a better word, personal obsession with Eric?
That was always a puzzle piece about max she couldn't fit with any of the others. Kaida slid on the balaclava while she waited for his answer. Which, by all means, would make this snatch-out easier or worse.

"Latner was an orphan, taken in by the DPS." He said gently, reaching for his jacket and pulling it on. Max didn't take a cyanide capsule with him. If he was real stuck in a corner, Maxwell knew that he could pull and fire his gun before anyone even managed to get a hand on him. Maxwell was a quick draw.
"All indviduals that are raised by the DPS are effectivly required to work for it, and at some point in their career, they take an orphan into their own care. Latner was recently assigned an orphan, so he'll be at home right now taking care of it."
Of course, Max didn't mention that he had Eric had been raised by the same DPS agent when they were younger. This was something that only Eric, Max, and James knew. Ol' Jimmy boy. But it was likely Eric was the only other one who knew who ol' Jimmy boy was.
Max smirked, head tilting and dark eyes fixing onto Kaida, an almost childish excitment creeping into his features. "Besides. He's got to walk his dogs, doesn't he? And prisoner rights declare that their left alone at night. Latner isn't going to float around all night at DPS."

Kaida slid the balaclava over her head and straightened it out. By the way she tilted her head and did a last run through of her equipment, one could tell that the information Max had just given her was new new to her ears.
"An orphan?" Ah. So that's who that boy was at the food court. Eric's orphan assainment. It made more sense to her now than it had before. Much more. A relieving feeling of comfort and surity at being able to complete this assignment alive crept into her facial features. Though due to the mask, no one could see the change.
Good. Nate would be all alone. Save for a few guards, she should not run into anyone. Her secret fear for the demolations master spread throughout her mind. She'd liked him for so long now. Though not one person would ever know outside herself. The people that might have guessed were dead or wishing for death. That's not the kind of information one wants floating around Stoneage. For christ's sake, it wasn't high school.
Kaida leaned against the wall by the warehouse entrance. When Max was ready, she wanted to be ready.

"Yes. Orphan." Max nodded, head idly tilting to one side as he strapped on a switchblade, and slid another into his boot. Then he gently affixed his own headset, giving him a temporary image of a wizard in a call centre. Hand then lifted and lazily pulled his hair back, letting his eyes fix onto Kaida.
He gave her a long, careful look. She'd been reliable for a long time, but then so had Nathan and look what he'd managed do to himself. This entire situation was turning into something he didn't particually like, and it was certainly something he hadn't planned. Of course, there was no safe bets in any sort of game like this, but Maxwell was looking at Kaida and really beginning to wonder if she'd served her purpose.
She was good at silent killing, but in combat she was flighty, slightly unpredicable and like all women let her heart rule her head. It was something women did, and it was why women always aimed for the chest rather than the head.
Being under scrutiny by Max was like being under a microscope. Tongue flickered briefly over his lips and then he shook his head, subconsciously reaching for the weapon at his side to check it was there. Then he slipped over to Nathan's bench and pocketed a small explosive, before doing the same with Fernn's now blood splattered compartment.
"If you do run into Latner, call for back up."
And with that he ducked off down the corridor. They were moving out.

Not one upward glance was cast towards the man she'd grown to respect after all these years. Yet she could feel his gaze upon her. It was an uneasy feeling. One she knew well but still could not adjust her body to not react to it. She felt almost like he was analyzing her. Not something she enjoyed having done, but who's to complain?
Kaida gave a brief nod to Max's last remark about Latner. In all actuality, she had no intentions what-so-ever of going head on with the head DPS agent. Latner was far more experienced than she. Even attempting such a thing would be bad news for her.
Shivers ran through her spine as they often did before things such as these. Fear was not knowing what she was up against. Therefor it was not fear that pricked at her insides, but something more intense. Something that constantly haunted her. She knew what she was going to be facing and that proved no hesitance in her attitude. If anything, it was anxiety.
Th medic slipped out into the corridor after Max. Forty-five minutes to get in and get out would be no issue. Her mind swarmed over things that would make this easier.
And Latner making a guest appearance wasn't one of them.
